Many strong women are featured in the markers chosen for chapter headings in The Goddess of Fried Okra, and no question the
Women’s Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) are among the most remarkable. These women flew every kind of mission short of combat in WWII, freeing male pilots for oversees missions.

GIRL POWER by Jean BrashearThey trained here, west of Abilene, at Avenger Field, which first trained British Royal Air Force Cadets in 1942, then US Army AirForces Cadets 1942-43. The WASPS trained from Feb 1943 through Dec. 7, 1944.

Just some of the fascinating women who made such a contribution to the cause of freedom in World War II, heroines all.
